The Velumani Residence
The Velumani Residence is a climate-responsive contemporary farmhouse where traditional planning and modern expression form a unified whole. Designed for a family that wanted the warmth of a traditional home without surrendering the openness of contemporary living, the project resolves that tension through a central courtyard — a space that anchors the plan, facilitates natural cross-ventilation and becomes the social heart of daily life.
Sloping roofs and deep overhangs translate vernacular forms into a refined language, while water bodies and plantation buffers are woven into the landscape as essential infrastructure that cools the microclimate and frames the view.
Inside, the spatial character balances flamboyance with a traditional framework — double-height volumes and open planning create a sense of generosity, while natural light, internal courts and water features give each space its own sensory character across the day. Stone, wood and glass are used not for effect but for honesty — materials that age well, feel right underfoot, and improve with time.
The result is a home that is unmistakably contemporary, unmistakably rooted and entirely its own.
